Final Still Life

This is a one hour still life of some objects that were lying around my living rooom.
For this compostition I used simple shaped objects and tried to focus my attention on the shading and the overall compostion.

This drawing shows a good use objects, creating a nice balance between the overall objects but also a good balance between the darker tones of the pot vase and the darker edge that surrounds the paper weight. There is an clear line that runs from the vase, through the candle and ends at the paper weight but also an implied line that runs from the top of the vase, through the square candle and up to the tip of the stick candle. The lighting for the compostition has been well portrayed through the use of an eraser to create the highlights on the objects.

The shading works well by following the contours of the objects to create the illusion of depth but is possibly lacking in places such as the dark fabric on which the objects are places. There are other problematic areas within this drawing such as the placement of the top of the vase. This seems to be off centre and does not represent the symmetry of the vase. The square candle was slightly raised due to it being sat on a crease in the fabric but this does not come across well in this image.

Final Landscape Drawing

This is a 50 minute landscape drawing of the Rochdale canal in Todmorden. I tried to focus on creating an interesting composition by using the rule of thirds, as well as ensuring the composition had a foreground, a middle ground and a background. This piece demonstrates a good sense of depth as the canal disappears into distance and it is clear to see that buildings in the background at at some distance.

Athough the canal seems to be shaded quite well, on the whole I feel this drawing has been let down by the shading, this could be due to the lack of tonal variation. The drawing shows a good sense of perspective but this is somewhat let down by the wall which runs from the right of the drawing, then under the house.

Final Life Drawing

This Final life drawing took 1 hour to create.
I chose to draw the subject from this angle to allow me to focus on my shading of the subtle defintion of the back.

This study shows a good use of measuring to create good and acurate body proportions as well as the subjects overall proportions in relation to the chair. The delicate tonal variations work well in creating the definition in the back muscles. hips and elbows.Athough subtle, there is a good sense of weight in this drawing, as the model has some of her weight placed on the right arm.

This drawing is let down by the shading around the shoulder blades. This area seems to be shaded wrong and shows the shoulder blades as being quite rounded, which would not be accurate. Other problematic area include the right hand, which looks like it is lacking in form. This could have been overcome by clearer defining the palm and thumb muscle. The Left shoulder also appears to be too rounded in shape.

Week 12

Week 11

Week 10

This is a 1 hour sketch of the Alhambra in Bradford.
This sketch has a very photograpic sense about it as the focus is quite wide as apposed to just concentrating on one small area of the  theatre. Although this sketch is lacking in shading it shows a good sense of the classical architecture that runs throughout the building. There is a good sense of perspective throughout the drawing and the sweeping lines of the balcony work well in drawing the viewer into the picture. The balcony areas are also problematic as the perpective on these area does not seem right.

Week 9

This is a 50 min sketch of the National Media Museum.
The focus is was to show the modern architecture through the bold and simple lines of the buildings design. The drawing displays some good use of shading following the sweeping curves of the wall. There have been attempts to add depth to the drawing by varying the tones of the shading that follows the ceiling and steel girders. There is also an impressionistic sense of the windows in the drawing portrayed through the use of lines that vary in in distance and weight.

Problematic areas for this drawing would include some of the shading. It has not worked well in this sketch due to poor technique. Also there is a bad sense of perpective in this drawing as the ceiling seems larger as it gets closer to the viewer, yet the box like units in the bottom of the picture decrease in size as they draw closer.

Week 8

These are quick sketches ranging from 3 to 8 minutes showing different animal form.
The sketches show good proportions overall although they could benefit from being drawn from a slightly more pleasing angle. The shading works well on the small bird showing its form well but this is not the case for the squirrel which lacks tonal variation and the detail needed to re create the fur.The outline of the duck works quite well and although lacking in detail, the infomation captured seem to work well in portraying the overall form.

Week 7

This 30 minute sketch which focuses on weight and balance.
This sketch sucessfully demostrates weight as we have a good sense of weight from the models right arm as he grips the pole as well as the left arm which is supporting the bulk of the bodys weight as he leans in towards the pole. The shading shows a good sense of definition and there is a nice contrast between the light and dark areas showing the subjects form.

Improvements could be made to the sketch as the left hand lacks form and detail. The models hips and knees may be too big in comparison to his waist. Also the angle of the hips may wrong in relation to the shoulders.

Week 6

These quick 30 second sketches are about the study of movement.
The focus here was to capture the gesture and poses of moving subjects.
Althouhg these images are somewhat badly drawn, due to the speed in which they were drawn, for the most part there is a clear sense of gesture and weight.
Improvements could be made in the future to ensure that the subjects display better proportionality and that more information is captured in the quick sketches.

Week 5

This sketch is a 12 minute study of the human form.
This is a good example of a static pose with closed form. You can see from angle of the head and the slight curving of the spine that the model looks to be in quite a relaxed pose. The crossed legs and hands that are resting inbetween the legs are a good indication of the closed form.
The drawing shows good proportion throughout and  a good use of measuring has been used to achieve this.

Although the proportions of the subject look accurate, their is a lack of detail in areas like the head and feet. The sketch also lacks shading which would add so much to the sketch by better defining the muscle and tonal differences in the skin of the model.

Week 4

This is a 45 minute exercise which focuses on foreshortening.
My main objective with ths sketch was to show how foreshortening affects objects.Notice how the headstock of the guitar is similar in length to the guitar neck and only slightly small than the guitars body, showing that the object has been drawn from an extreme angle. Although this study successfully show a good use of foreshortening, the bridge of the guitar seems to lack depth and is somewhat flat in appearance. The ellipse of the sound hole also looks like it may not have been drawn at the correct angle. This sketch may also be let down by the shading, although this was not my main focus for this study.

Here is another 15 minute study of foeshortening.
unlike the previous study this object has not been drawn from such an extreme angle but foreshortening is still evident in the right handle of the pliers. By opening the pliers we are able to see a direct comparison between the foreshortened handle and the handle on the left which is drawn from a normal angle. More time has been spent shading this object to try and create the difference in texture between the plastic handle and the darkened metal of the pliers head.

Week 3

This is a 1 hour still life drawing
This drawing focuses on the simplicity and relationship between the two objects.
The objects have good proportions and are well balanced between each other.
I have tried to focus on creating variation between the various textures on display in this sketch, ranging from the rough plastic that surrounds the amp, to the fabric, which covers the speakers as well as the polished finish of the guitar body. There are slight tonal variations on the guitar where the body is worn with highlights picked out showing how the light interacts with the objects.

I feel this is a problematic piece due to composition being quite dull. This serves as a good example of how more thought should be applied to the arrangement of the objects on the page(the guitar is very cental and this is not pleasing to the eye) Also the composition suffers from having no background, which would connect the objects to their environment and create a much more interesting drawing.

Week 2

This 30 minute contour drawing focuses on showing the form of the objects.
Through simple outlines and the use of simple convex curves we are able to see clearly the form of the objects.Although basic, the lines that depict the table cloth work well in showing the depth and creases within the drapery.

This is a 15 minute study of negative space.
This study is good in showing how the space between your objects are still valid shapes and how if they are accurately represented they will produce a clear shape to your objects.
By focusing on the negative space between the objects you are clearly able to see the objects shape as well as how the objects are placed in relation to each other.

This pictures seems to show the object on the left as a 'kissing' object. I believe this down to negative space not being accurately represented rather than
being draw from a poor perspective.

Week 1

This is a 40 minute still life refresher.
This drawing shows a good use of shading showing the variation in texture between the drapery and the wooden chair. The form of the chair is well represented and there is a good sense how the cloth is draped over the object due to the folds within the cloth.
The table lacks detail and needed more shading. Also the true shape of the cloth is not fully represented in the checker pattern that runs through it. This drawing could also benefit from adding some of the background detail
