Final Still Life

This is a one hour still life of some objects that were lying around my living rooom.
For this compostition I used simple shaped objects and tried to focus my attention on the shading and the overall compostion.

This drawing shows a good use objects, creating a nice balance between the overall objects but also a good balance between the darker tones of the pot vase and the darker edge that surrounds the paper weight. There is an clear line that runs from the vase, through the candle and ends at the paper weight but also an implied line that runs from the top of the vase, through the square candle and up to the tip of the stick candle. The lighting for the compostition has been well portrayed through the use of an eraser to create the highlights on the objects.

The shading works well by following the contours of the objects to create the illusion of depth but is possibly lacking in places such as the dark fabric on which the objects are places. There are other problematic areas within this drawing such as the placement of the top of the vase. This seems to be off centre and does not represent the symmetry of the vase. The square candle was slightly raised due to it being sat on a crease in the fabric but this does not come across well in this image.

Final Landscape Drawing

This is a 50 minute landscape drawing of the Rochdale canal in Todmorden. I tried to focus on creating an interesting composition by using the rule of thirds, as well as ensuring the composition had a foreground, a middle ground and a background. This piece demonstrates a good sense of depth as the canal disappears into distance and it is clear to see that buildings in the background at at some distance.

Athough the canal seems to be shaded quite well, on the whole I feel this drawing has been let down by the shading, this could be due to the lack of tonal variation. The drawing shows a good sense of perspective but this is somewhat let down by the wall which runs from the right of the drawing, then under the house.

Final Life Drawing

This Final life drawing took 1 hour to create.
I chose to draw the subject from this angle to allow me to focus on my shading of the subtle defintion of the back.

This study shows a good use of measuring to create good and acurate body proportions as well as the subjects overall proportions in relation to the chair. The delicate tonal variations work well in creating the definition in the back muscles. hips and elbows.Athough subtle, there is a good sense of weight in this drawing, as the model has some of her weight placed on the right arm.

This drawing is let down by the shading around the shoulder blades. This area seems to be shaded wrong and shows the shoulder blades as being quite rounded, which would not be accurate. Other problematic area include the right hand, which looks like it is lacking in form. This could have been overcome by clearer defining the palm and thumb muscle. The Left shoulder also appears to be too rounded in shape.

Week 12

Week 11

Week 10

This is a 1 hour sketch of the Alhambra in Bradford.
This sketch has a very photograpic sense about it as the focus is quite wide as apposed to just concentrating on one small area of the  theatre. Although this sketch is lacking in shading it shows a good sense of the classical architecture that runs throughout the building. There is a good sense of perspective throughout the drawing and the sweeping lines of the balcony work well in drawing the viewer into the picture. The balcony areas are also problematic as the perpective on these area does not seem right.

Week 9

This is a 50 min sketch of the National Media Museum.
The focus is was to show the modern architecture through the bold and simple lines of the buildings design. The drawing displays some good use of shading following the sweeping curves of the wall. There have been attempts to add depth to the drawing by varying the tones of the shading that follows the ceiling and steel girders. There is also an impressionistic sense of the windows in the drawing portrayed through the use of lines that vary in in distance and weight.

Problematic areas for this drawing would include some of the shading. It has not worked well in this sketch due to poor technique. Also there is a bad sense of perpective in this drawing as the ceiling seems larger as it gets closer to the viewer, yet the box like units in the bottom of the picture decrease in size as they draw closer.

Week 8

These are quick sketches ranging from 3 to 8 minutes showing different animal form.
The sketches show good proportions overall although they could benefit from being drawn from a slightly more pleasing angle. The shading works well on the small bird showing its form well but this is not the case for the squirrel which lacks tonal variation and the detail needed to re create the fur.The outline of the duck works quite well and although lacking in detail, the infomation captured seem to work well in portraying the overall form.
